Most
Ellen G. White books have been issued in many printings and some in
several distinct editions, marked principally by the resetting of type
and, at times, with changed pagination. Other variations might be in
changes in material supplementary to the Ellen G. White text, such as
title page, foreword, or preface and in materials at the close, such
as appendix, indexes, etc. The principal editions are listed below and
especially those significant to the reader. More detailed information
concerning many of the editions is revealed in the preface or foreword
of the individual works.
It has been difficult to draw the line between
pamphlets and books. There are more than one hundred Ellen G. White
pamphlets of varying size. Many of these have found their way into
current books, e.g., "Justified by Faith," now in Selected
Messages, Bk. 1, pp. 389-398. Only those of particular lasting
significance are here noted.
It should also be observed that, in listing the
Ellen G. White works, there are a number of volumes in which there is
more or less duplication; for instance, Testimonies for the Church,
Volume 1, was published in 1885, but the content is a
republication of "Testimonies," Numbers 1-14, which were
first issued between 1855 and 1868. Spirit of Prophecy, Volumes
1 to 4, were replaced by the five volumes of the enlarged
"Conflict of the Ages Series," etc.
A number of Ellen G. White books, such as Steps
to Christ and The Desire of Ages, were prepared by the
author, both to serve Seventh-day Adventists and to be used in
colporteur sale to non-Adventists. At times two distinct editions were
printed. The terminology used in denominational publishing circles has
been employed in this documentation, indicating printings intended for
church members as "trade books" and those intended for
colporteur sale to the general public as "subscription
books."
Included in this listing are several publications
that are not essentially Ellen G. White books, but that are often
thought of in connection with the E. G. White writings because they
contain a sizable amount of E. G. White material which forms an
integral part of the work. Special notation is made in each case
concerning the portion authored by Mrs. White.
In listing the publishers, initials are used for
the Pacific Press (PP); Review and Herald (RH); and Southern
Publishing Association (SPA).
No attempt is made at uniformity in the
explanations. Many works need but little. Fuller explanations are
given concerning out-of-print books which are frequently referred to.
In the listing below, titles appearing in italics
are out of print. Asterisk (*) indicates initial edition out of print,
but available in other forms. The sign (**) indicates recently
reprinted in facsimile form.

Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich. Contains two distinct sections, each
paged separately. The first (pp. 5-156) is an account of Biblical
history from the building of the tabernacle to the days of Solomon
with two chapters bridging to the Messiah, followed by chapter
entitled "Health" and related material. The Biblical history
was later amplified somewhat to become the last part of Spirit of
Prophecy, Vol. 1 (1870). The 32-page chapter "Health" is
the first comprehensive presentation of the health message as given to
Ellen G. White in the vision of June 6, 1863. Amplified in 1865 to
become the six E. G. W. chapters published one each in a series of six
pamphlets entitled Health, or How to Live. The second section
(pp. 1-160) presents a reprint in somewhat condensed form of Testimonies,
Nos. 1-10. The two distinct sections are officially abbreviated as
4SG-a and 4SG-b.
1865 Health, or How to Live (six numbered
pamphlets bound together), 296 pp. (86 pp. by E. G. W.). Steam Press,
Battle Creek, Mich. The six E. G. W. articles, one in each number, are
an amplification of her basic article "Health" in Spiritual
Gifts, Vol. 4 (1864) and deal with (1) Diet; (2) Marriage and
Child Care; (3) Drugs; (4) Fresh Air, Exercise, and General Hygiene;
(5) Proper Dress for Children; (6) Proper Dress for Women. These six

1870 A Solemn Appeal Relative to Solitary Vice
and Abuses and Excesses of the Marriage Relation, 272 pp. (111 pp.
by E. G. W.). Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich. Seven of the fifty-four
chapters of this work, "edited" by James White and
representing the work of many authors, were written by E. G. W.: (1)
"Appeal to Mothers" is a reprint of her 1864 pamphlet of
that title; (2) three chapters, "The Marriage Relation,"
"The Care of Children," E. G. W. article in No. 2 of Health,
or How to Live, now in Selected Messages, Bk. 2, pp.
420-440; and (3) three chapters, "Obedience to the Law of
God," "Female Modesty," and "Sentimentalism,"
drawn from the article "An Appeal to the Church" in Testimonies,
Vol. 2, pp. 448-486, with slight editorial changes made under Mrs.
Whites supervision for the non-Adventist reader. The E. G. W.
materials noted above were, in the 1890s, extracted and printed in
Australia as an 88-page Ellen G. White pamphlet titled A Solemn
Appeal. The counsels in the E. G. W. portion of A Solemn Appeal
are presented even more comprehensively in The Adventist Home, Section
V, and Child Guidance, Section XVI.
1870 Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 1, The
Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels and Satan and His
Angels, 414 pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich. Opens with the
fall of Lucifer and deals with Biblical history to Solomon, with
chapter bridging to the Messiah. Largely an amplification of the
Biblical history presented in Spiritual Gifts, Vols. 3 and 4
(1864). Later amplified to become Patriarchs and Prophets (1890),
which replaced this volume. Early chapters reproduced in The Story
of Redemption (1947).

pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1871 *Testimony for the Church, No. 20, 199

pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1872 *Testimony for the Church, No. 22, 192
pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1873 *Testimony for the Church, No. 23, 116
pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1874 Redemption; or The Temptation of Christ in
the Wilderness, 96 pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich. A reprint
of articles published both in Signs of the Times and Review
and Herald in 1874 and 1875, presenting the account of the
temptation in great detail and this in the larger setting of the
origin of sin, the fall of man, and the plan of redemption. Drawn from
by E. G. W. in the preparation of the 14-page chapter on the
temptation for Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2 (1877). General
subject matter paralleled in several E. G. W. books. In 1877 made the
second of a series of eight large numbered pamphlets entitled
"Redemption," dealing with various phases of the life and
ministry of Christ and the apostles, being a rearrangement of chapters
on the subject drawn from the simultaneously published Spirit of
Prophecy, Vols. 2 and 3.
1875 *Testimony for the Church, No. 24, 192
pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1875 *Testimony for the Church, No. 25, 192
pp. Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1876 *Testimony for the Church, No. 26, 208
pp. Pacific Press Pub. Assn., Oakland, Calif.
1876 *Testimony for the Church, No. 27, 190
pp. Pacific Press Pub. Assn., Oakland, Calif.
1877 Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 2, The
Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan. Life, Teachings, and
Miracles of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 396 pp. Steam Press,
Battle Creek, Mich. Treats the life of Christ from His birth to the
triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Issued simultaneously with chapters
topically arranged in a series of large pamphlets entitled Redemption.
1877 Redemption (eight pamphlets with covers
serially numbered). Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich.
1. 1877 "Redemption, or The First Advent of
Christ With His Life and Ministry," 104 pp.
2. 1874 "Redemption, or The Temptation of
Christ in the Wilderness," 96 pp.
3. 1877 "Redemption, or The Miracles of
Christ the Mighty One," 126 pp.
4. 1877 "Redemption, or The Teachings of
Christ the Anointed One," 128 pp.
5. 1877 "Redemption, or The Sufferings of
Christ, His Trial and Crucifixion," 96 pp.
6. 1877 "Redemption, or The Resurrection of
Christ and His Ascension," 80 pp.
7. 1878 "Redemption, or The Ministry of
Peter and the Conversion of Saul," 78 pp.
8. 1878 "Redemption, or The Teachings of
Paul and His Mission to the Gentiles," 80 pp.
These pamphlets were published for wide general
distribution, and were put through the press simultaneously with Spirit
of Prophecy, Vols. 2 (1877) and 3 (1878) and were printed
from the same type. In place of the chronological arrangement, the
chapters of these pamphlets were grouped according to subject
coverage. In a very few cases there were condensations or expansions
and also adjustments in some chapter openings, better to serve the
purpose of pamphlet coverage. With the exception of No. 2, "The
Temptation of Christ," which deals in great detail with the
topic, it could be said that the Redemption series was a
reproduction of the chapters of Spirit of Prophecy, Vols. 2 and 3.
1878 Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 3, The
Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan. The Death, Resurrection,
and Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 392 pp. (442 pp. in
subsequent printing). Steam Press, Battle Creek, Mich. Twenty chapters
dealing with the last days of the ministry of Christ and eleven
chapters touching on the life and work of the apostles. Issued
simultaneously with chapters topically arranged in a series of large
pamphlets entitled Redemption. Eventually amplified to become
the last part of The Desire of Ages (1898) and The Acts of
the Apostles.
(1911) Volumes which replaced this work. In a later
printing (cir. 1883), five chapters on the life and ministry of Paul
were added, bringing the total to 442 pages. These same chapters
appear in Sketches From the Life of Paul (1883).
1879 *Testimony for the Church, No. 28, 192
pp. S.D.A. Publishing Assn., Battle Creek, Mich.
1880 *Testimony for the Church, No. 29, 192
pp. S.D.A. Publishing Assn., Battle Creek, Mich.

republication of the larger part of the autobiographical work, Spiritual
Gifts, Vol. 2 (1860), pp. 7-212, and reproduced here with only
slight editorial changes. Entire volume reprinted in 1888 with sketch
of the death of James White (453 pp.).

pp. S.D.A. Publishing Assn., Battle Creek, Mich.

pp. Review and Herald Pub. Assn. and Pacific Press Pub. Assn.
1882 Early Writings of Ellen G. White, 266
pp. (RH and PP). Issued initially in 1882 under the title Early
Writings of Mrs. White, Experience and Views, and Spiritual Gifts,
Vol. 1. By Mrs. E. G. White, Second Edition. In this were united
the individually printed second editions (1882) of three early
publications:
(1) A Sketch of the Christian Experience and
Views of Mrs. E. G. White (71 pp.), being a reprint of her 64-page
1851 book with two of her early dreams and a dream of Wm. Miller
added.
(2) Supplement to Christian Experience and Views
(40 pp.), first published in 1854.
(3) Spiritual Gifts, Vol. I, Sketches From
the Life of Christ and the Experience of the Christian Church (154
pp.), being a reprint of the 1858 Spiritual Gifts but with the
title changed to better suit the bulk of the subject matter and avoid
a conflict with other works, now titled The Great Controversy.
Other editions which should be noted are:
1906 295 pp. E. G. W. text, 316 pp. overall (RH).
Type was reset and a new preface written for this third edition. The
three sections, while maintaining their identity, were drawn together
in one continuous pagination, to become the standard in reference
work.
1945 295 pp. E. G. W. text, 316 pp. overall (RH). A
fourth edition with reset type and a preface furnished by White
Trustees. Paging unchanged.
1883 Sketches From the Life of Paul, 334 pp.
(RH and PP). A much-loved work of 32 chapters, devoted to the life and
teachings of the apostle Paul. Replaced by the fuller The Acts of
the Apostles (1911), dealing not only with Pauls life and
teachings but also the experience of the other apostles. This was in
harmony with the larger planning for the five volumes of the
"Conflict of the Ages Series," filling the gap between The
Desire of Ages and The Great Controversy.
1884 Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 4, The
Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan. From the
Destruction of Jerusalem to the End of the Controversy, 506 pp.
(PP and RH). Soon after the issuance of this volume, the coverage of
which is described in the title, illustrations were added to make a
subscription edition to be sold by colporteurs. Some of the ten
printings of this 1884 book, made between 1884 and 1887, were numbered
as "Fifth Edition," "Sixth Edition," etc., and
date of printing given. Later amplified to become The Great
Controversy Between Christ and Satan (1888).
1885 Testimonies for the Church, Vols. 1-4,
2,619 pp. (combined, PP and RH). Reprint of Testimonies, Nos. 1-30,
in four numbered volumes to become the third edition of the foundation
of the nine-volume set. Testimony articles preceded in Volume 1 by a
"Biographical Sketch" (pp. 9-112). Reset edition (1948)
maintained established paging but embodied some appendix notes,
enlarged subject indexes, and at the opening of each volume a
background statement giving the historical setting or "the
times" of the volume.
1885 *Testimony for the Church, No. 32, 238
pp. (PP and RH).
1886 Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions
of the Seventh-day Adventists. With Reports of the European
Missionary Councils of 1883, 1884, and 1885, and a Narrative by Mrs.
E. G. White of Her Visit and Labors in These Missions, 294
double-column pages (120 double-column pages by E. G. W.). Published
at Imprimerie Polyglotte, Basle, Switzerland.
The E. G. W. portion consists of (1) "Notes of
Travel," tracing her journey from California to Europe and her
account of the first of her three visits to many of the European
countries, drawn largely from her reports published in the Review
and Herald; (2) thirteen "Practical Addresses," given at
the councils attended in September, 1885; and (3) three concluding
chapters presenting an "Appeal for Our Missions."
1888 The Great Controversy Between Christ and
Satan During the Christian Dispensation, 678 pp. of E. G. W. text,
704 pp. overall, with appendix (PP and RH). Traces the Conflict story
from destruction of Jerusalem to the time of writing and then, in a
forecast, presents earths closing events, the second advent, and
the experience of the righteous and the wicked to the close of the
millennium and the new earth. Represents a rewriting and amplification
of Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 4 (1884), which it replaces. The
first of the Conflict books prepared under Mrs. Whites plan, that
there would be five books tracing the Great Controversy story which
would serve both Adventists and non-Adventists. Of all her books she
valued this the most highly. Appeared in many printings and published
in several editions with varying paginations.
Other editions which should be noted are: 1907 678

pp. overall. Good Health Pub. Co., Battle Creek, Mich.
The preface declares: "This book is not a new
presentation . . but is simply a compilation, and in some sense an
abstract, of the various writings of Mrs. White upon this subject
(health), to which have been added several articles by Elder James
White elucidating the same principles . . The work of compilation has
been done under the supervision of Mrs. White, by a committee
appointed by her for the purpose; and the manuscript has been
carefully examined by her.
"The purpose in the preparation of this volume
has been to gather together, in a condensed form, writings which were
scattered through various volumes, and some that have never before
appeared in print."
The E. G. W. section comprises eighteen chapters
and a group of "fragments." She later amplified the
